]]><![CDATA[Wet and windy but still wonderful!]]>Mon, 09 Mar 2020 14:12:13 GMThttps://www.cranbornemid.dorset.sch.uk/year-8/wet-and-windy-but-still-wonderfulDespite the wet and windy weather conditions at last week's Year 4 netball festival, spirits were not dampened. A group of our Year 8 Sports Leaders had been busily planning and organising the first school festival for Cranborne First, Sixpenny Handley and Wimborne St Giles. 
The leaders expertly took the year 4 children for their warm-up games and then we started.... and so did the rain!
There were some very wet, bedraggled children but all continued to play well and with full effort and enthusiasm.
All teams played 4 matches in a round robin style tournament before the leaders announced the results in the warmth of the Hall.
Congratulations go to Cranborne First School Yellow team who were crowned the winners after winning all their games and not conceding any goals.
Thank you from us to all the children, teachers, parents and supporters who came to watch and get wet!

After several weeks of competing in the PEDSSA netball league at Parkstone Grammar School, our Year 8 netball team emerged as silver medalists in the B pool league beating St Edwards, Allenbourn, Ferndown, Broadstone, Purbeck and Parkstone D.
I am proud of the girls’ efforts and their commitment to training since September. They all fully deserve their silver medals. Well done girls!

]]><![CDATA[Dorset Leadership Academy Day]]>Wed, 18 Dec 2019 20:58:09 GMThttps://www.cranbornemid.dorset.sch.uk/year-8/dorset-leadership-academy-dayTen of our Year 8 Sports Leaders set off from school to attend the Dorset Leadership Academy held at Bryanston School in Blandford. This event is an annual event that has been running for the last five years and has grown in popularity tremendously. This year's event was attended by 36 schools from across the county who brought along pupils from years 7,8,9 and 10 to learn more leadership skills and to be inspired to take these new skills back to their own schools.
Our leaders were treated to an opening address speech from ex South African rugby player, Thinius Delport, who spoke about the challenges he faced throughout his career and how he overcame them:

Pupils then headed off to their workshops which were led by a variety of sports professionals from across the county. Sporting their new t-shirts, our leaders stepped up and participated in numerous activities that encouraged them to work together, solve problems and use their initiative. 

We then all met in the theatre to end the day by watching the Dance team perform their final dance and to hear John  Pearce, GB Handball player (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pearce_(handballer), remind the pupils about how to thrive as leaders in the future and to seize every opportunity that comes their way.

A huge thank you to all the School Games Organisers for putting on such a wonderful experience, to Active Dorset for providing the funding for the event, and to Bryanston School for the use of their facilities and staff.
]]><![CDATA[Tag Rugby Festival Champions.]]>Tue, 17 Dec 2019 12:20:36 GMThttps://www.cranbornemid.dorset.sch.uk/year-8/tag-rugby-festival-championsAfter a very wet and windy morning, congratulations to Cranborne First School who emerged victorious in the recent CMS cluster tag rugby festival. Despite the wet weather, the children enjoyed the experience. The sports leaders had participated in a training session run by Wimborne Rugby coach, Nick Elbourne, so were feeling confident with their newly taught skills. 
The festival was well received and a big thank you goes to all the schools who took part, the parents and family members who came to support the event, the sports leaders for giving up their time to run the festival and to Nick Elbourne for his invaluable expertise.
]]><![CDATA[Active 30-30 Champions]]>Thu, 05 Dec 2019 21:12:12 GMThttps://www.cranbornemid.dorset.sch.uk/year-8/active-30-30-championsA small, select group of Year 8 pupils visited St Michael's Middle School, Wimborne to take part in the Active 30-30 initiative. This Youth Sport Trust initiative aims to encourage the least active pupils in schools to take part in up to 30 extra minutes of physical activity every day.
Our Year 8's met ex-paralympic swimmer, Kate Grey, who put them through their paces by challenging them to all kinds of different tasks throughout their day. The group now have to come back to CMS and organise a club for pupils at school. Watch this space for more details of the club!

Over half an hour, ensure that your map is complete: accurate and neatly coloured displaying five main cities, three main rivers, two mountain ranges, at least one desert and any other features you think are important (but not too many). Add facts around the map from your own research to ensure it is complete to serve you through the unit. Don't forget a title, key, North Sign and scale!

]]><![CDATA[Step into Sport.]]>Mon, 25 Nov 2019 20:41:27 GMThttps://www.cranbornemid.dorset.sch.uk/year-8/step-into-sportSeven of our Year 8 pupils visited The Victoria School in Bournemouth today to take part in 'Step into Sport'. This event invites school pupils from all over Dorset to build upon their existing leadership skills and boost their confidence when working with pupils with disabilities. Upon arrival, our pupils showed their worth straight away by offering to help set up the sports hall for all the activities to come.

Our pupils then experienced a range of inclusive activities that could be adapted for a range of different people including: Boccia, Kurling, Target practice, skittle slalom courses and, their favourite of the day, Seated Volleyball.
The group were also tasked with drawing a picture that represented inclusion. It was lovely to hear all the pupils discussing confidently and openly what they thought it meant before working together to draw a picture of the world with people holding hands around it. It was the only picture that was commented on and singled out for praise from David himself!

We were set the challenge of going back to school to set up a club for specific pupils in order to promote inclusion and fun. The hard work has only just begun. Watch this space for more blogs about the club!

For homework year 8 need to prepare a timeline of The Tudors. Aiming high to gain one of the top stars is a challenge, but will really help you understand the situation in Britain, especially for Henry VIII as he divorced Catherine of Aragon and reformed the church. Use only one side of A4 for your timeline (two if you want to go for the "Greater Depth" or “Mastery” star) and use these websites to help you with your research, remembering not to just copy off the internet, but to where possible, use your own words.
