Word problems in maths

In Maths this week we have been learning to solve word problems using the Bar Method. It has been a really good time to explore problems and think about the different ways we can use our place value knowledge to help us. Below is an example of a problem we created, can you solve it? Leave your answers as a comment below!

Thomas' Problem
McDonalds' have 88,642 Chicken Selects, each fridge can hold 8,000 individual chicken selects. We have sold 58,062 so far.

How many more do we need to sell?
How many fridges are needed in total?
If they are stored in the fridge in bags of 40, how many bags are left?

First - I took away 58,062 from 88,642 to get 30,580. Next I worked out how many fridges were needed. As each fridge holds 8,000 pieces, I worked out that 11 fridges were needed to hold 88,000 (11 x 8000 = 88,000) pieces but needed another fridge to put in the last 642 pieces, so 12 fridges altogether. Finally, I worked out that each full fridge could hold 200 bags maximum (200 x 40 is 8000) and in the 12th fridge there were only 16 full bags,(642 divided by 40 is 16) and one bag left containing 2 pieces.

I realised that I did not read the third part of the question correctly. So to work out how many bags are left I divided 30,580 by 40. The answer is 764 and a half bags. I worked this out by doing long division.
