Copyright - Is it a good idea?

In year 8, we have been talking about Copyright, learning about the different things that can be protected by copyright. But is it a good idea?

I don't believe that copyright isn't a good idea as there are high chances of jail time and/or a high amount of money to pay.
Although it could be good as it could make you loaded, famous and a worldwide phenomenon as the person who ‘created’ such a good meme/video/picture/catchphrase/design.
One example that went very wrong was the Gucci vs guess
Gucci sued guess in the year of 2009 after they used some of Gucci’s trademark logos and designs. The initial clause was a total of 221 million pound but the judge decided to only let them pay 4.5 million pounds
This is now copyrighted if I find this on the internet I will be onto you

I think copyright is good because people are out there making their lives out of the money they are gaining from copyright! Otherwise people that have posted a picture online doesn’t have the right to post it without worrying about it and this wouldn’t be ok ; as people wont to be safe online and people that made the photo could lose out on their money which isn’t fair.

Good point Jake but I still agree with Olly and you also don't have to put a picture because people watching YouTube would know who mickey Mouse was and if they really different they could search him up themselves they don't need a video to do that

what if they are caught and have to pay their lifetime savings and have to give everything away just to pay for the final amount.
for example something like the show cant pay we will take it away

I have mixed opinions on copyright as it protects things being copied, but then again if somebody put a Mickey Mouse image on their website then I think that it should be allowed as long as the website author doesn’t claim Mickey to be their idea.

Yes! Of course it is! If copyright was not invented, everyone would be able to plagiarise each other and nothing would be original. You see, people can make money of using YOUR things. If someone steals someone’s content, they can do nothing but watch if copyright was not a thing; they would be sitting ducks! Because copyright is in place, content is safe from being stolen. Would you like to have you content stolen? :D

I think that copyright is a good idea because if you like your photo or whatever and you don’t want anyone to use it, you would know that it is safe and if anyone take it you make some money and who does not like money. I went on to a website to research and this is what they say oh wait that would be copyright and that’s the silly part of copyright people make a living out of copyrighting things.

I think that copyright is a good idea because if you create something that has not been made before and you don’t copyright it ,someone could take this and sell it as there own and you cant do anything about it because you didn’t copyright it.
E.g. Star Wars vs. Battle star Galactic-because battle star Galactic had taken a bit too much from the star wars film
Apple vs. Microsoft
this may also happen if you send pictures to your friends then they post it without permission then that is still copyright as you don't have there permission.

However, if it is your friends they are not going to sue you. They would probably just say can you ask next time you take a picture because that might be a special picture to you and they won't know the story behind the picture

I think copyright is a bad idea because if someone needs a photo for homework or something it could take ages to find a photo that is free. So, if it is on the internet anyone should be able to use it as if no one wanted others to use it what is the point in putting up a photo. I disagree with copyright and don’t think you should be fined or taken to court if it is on the internet.

Personally, I would say they would not be a true friend but even with copyright they can not stop people from using it or anything. Also, how did they get the photo if you only showed them?

I think copyright is a good idea because it protects artistic works, dramatic works, musical works, literary works, sound recordings and broadcasts from thefts. How would you feel if some of your work was stolen?

Footage of the play would be copyrighted. The performers would have tiny changes in the script.

I think that copyrighting is a good idea as it allows people to publish personal things online and not have to worry about their things being stolen or taken as another person’s. If copyright didn’t exist then many people would lose money as other people would steal their ideas and could take all the credit for an idea that wasn’t theirs.

I think copyrighting is a good idea as it can protect you. So if you show a picture to someone and they use it in a video for the world to see, it could have details and if there was no copyright, strangers could see where you live. But, if there is a photo you need for homework, it is useful for no copyright. Overall, I think copyright should be kept up for peoples safety, but websites like Pexels should keep going.

I think that copyright is a good idea because without it, copying someone’s picture or idea is like stealing someone’s personal belongings. Also, it persuades you to be original and not copy other people’s ideas when creating something. I also think that it is a great idea that the copyright lasts for 70 years after you have died.

We think that the artist who took/made the photo is entitled to own the picture. Your work is an asset to you and you have the right to own a picture that you have taken as you could end up with a lot of publicity and if there was no copyright, you could lose that by the click of two or three buttons. It should belong to you as it may contain things that are personal to you and they may not be allowed to be put on social media and be seen by the world. An example of copyright at its best is the incident of Roger vs. Roon. You can look at the outcome on this website: https://99designs.co.uk/blog/tips-en-gb/5-famous-copyright-infringement-cases/ . However, I think you should be allowed to post a picture of a cartoon character onto a website, as long as you don’t claim the picture as yours. If you don't want people using your picture, don't share it with everyone!

A women in Minnesota got £220,000 in fines for creating a copyrighted music website. In the UK for doing copyright you can get fined £50,000 or 6 months in county jail for not getting permission for using someone else's image, video or sound. The highest amount is 10 years in jail or an unlimited fine for copyrighting as well. So unless you have that much money or that much time to waste in your own life for using someone's work for your own. Instead of using someone's own work why don't you just go to the website https://www.pexels.com/ were they use images that aren't copyrighted for free. So in my own opinion I think it’s a good idea since you can still use images, videos and sounds but only if you follow the rules. So what is the point of doing it in the first place then?

Copyright is a good idea because if you work hard for something for it to be copied and it earned more stuff from it than your original, it would be really annoying. However, this would also be good because then you can take the person to court to get money of them for copying your work. 

I think that copyright is a good idea as if that person was the true owner of this photo or video then it isn’t anybody else’s right to post or use this without permission from the owner when it is quite clearly not theirs to use. That is where copyright comes in, legally you cannot use that photo if it isn’t yours so you could get fined or sewed and if you get caught using it then the owner can claim copyright and take you to court. If I am arguing against copyright then I could say that it is a bad thing because some people might say that it isn’t fair that they cannot use a photo just because somebody else has taken it. If there is a student that has done their homework and had to use photos to complete it and they used photos from google then they could get copyrighted which I don’t think is right. Apple is in court a lot, especially when it comes to Google. After all, there are many companies that are making phones using Google’s Android software. Steve Jobs repeatedly called the Android a “stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

Personally, I have mixed opinions about whether copyright is a good or bad idea. It is a bad idea because you can steal someone's money and put them in jail just for copying as little as a photo. On the other hand, copyright is a good idea because it can prevent a company from losing millions if their logo is copied.

Copyright is a good thing but I also think it is a bad thing because some people try to steal photos that are not theirs and deserve punishment or fines but the penalties are quite extreme. If some one is accused of copyright they go to court and the judge decides their punishment; in the UK the maximum penalty for copyright is 6 months of prison or up to £50,000 depending how bad the copyright is. Therefore, I think that it is good and a bad thing; but something you definitely need to be careful and aware about. Even if you take a photo from google or have a photo in a YouTube video and it was not yours you would be brought to court for copyright, and would have to accept the punishment even if it was not on purpose.

Copyright is not a good idea because you can get fined £50,000 and you can have up to 6 months in prison depending on how bad it is. If you wanted to use a picture or video on you media site you could take pictures from a site called https://www.pexels.com/ and this site does not contain copyright. If you used a picture from Google images like it's your own you can get fined and whatever you earnt you can loose all of that money. It's not good to copyright!!

Yes, I do feel that copyright is a good idea because if you took a long time making or doing something and someone else used it, they are taking your pride away. If you are caught taking copyrighted materials, you could face penalties of more than £76,000.

Copyright doesn't last forever though as in 2026 all Disney product and characters are unable to sue them as it wont be copyrighted then. So if I was quick I could copyright all Disney products

We think that Copyright is good if you are using it for the world to see. For e.g. using it on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter or any other source of Social Medias. An exception for not using Copyright pictures would be if you were using it for instance homework as it’s not going to affect the owner of the image as much as a viral piece of media that’s Copyright. Also, to put into consideration, for Copyright you could face a fine of over £4 million. On the other hand, with Copyright the owner of the photo could gain a huge amount of money from people copyrighting their work.

It`s bad because someone can rob people of their money just by using their picture, and if they didn`t want their picture to be used by anyone, why put it up so the whole world can see? A famous example is one that included Barack Obama and the famous street art poster for his run for president in 2008.
The famous street artist was Shepard Fairey. When the design was revealed by the Press the person who shot the original photo demanded compensation for Shepard using their photo. In January 2011, the Press and Fairey agreed that they would split the profit in half for both their work.

I think copyright is good as it can protect you or others content that has been shared. It technically protects you from robbers and if they steal your content then they have high prison time and huge fines. But I can be bad as if you share it people are obviously want to use it so why post it on the internet. Real life examples would include entire companies shutting down which could be bad or good. For example Star wars sued Battlestar Galactica for using most of their ideas (34 distinct ideas). Star wars won the debate and got £20000 back.

I think copyright is a good idea.
Firstly, you have an original idea or piece of creative work, no matter what others may say, it’s still an asset. In the future, it could be worth a large amount of money
Next, you want to protect your work. If someone violates your copyright, you will have legal rights to claim copyright. If they are using your work without your knowledge, you also have a right to stop them doing so and receive compensation for any earnings they have made off the back of your work.

Famous street artist Shephard Fairey created the Hope poster during President Obama’s first run for presidential election in 2008. The design rapidly became a symbol for Obama’s campaign.
In January 2009, the photograph on which Fairey allegedly based the design was revealed by the Associated Press with the AP demanding compensation for its use in Fairey’s work. Fairey responded with the defense of fair use, claiming his work didn’t reduce the value of the original photograph.
The artist and the AP press came to a private settlement in January 2011, part of which included a split in the profits for the work.
Though there wasn’t a court case and an actual verdict, this case created a lot of discourse around the value of work in these copyright battles. But still had a problem with the fact that Fairley took the image without permission and without credit for its originator.
