Poetry Perfection from Year 7

The last unit of work Year 7 studied this year was poetry. Each set took a different theme and looked at poems focusing on a chosen topic; these were then used to inspire the pupils to write their own poem. Some of these poems went on to be worked on yet further and were prepared for a Poetry Competition which was held in the school hall during the last week of term. The standard of poems produced was delightfully high and we were treated to a high standard of poems from all competitors. Two poems were finally chosen as the ‘winners’ and they can be seen here. The topic for Laura and Lizzie’s poem was Courage and Kerry’s poem was based on the theme of Flight. Enjoy….I know we did!

Victorious Flight

I rise, soaring into the sky,
Floating high, heaven bound,
Fluttering my majestic wings,
Using rhythmic motion under the baking sun.
Slicing through the wind and clouds,
Gliding gracefully on their invisible waves,
Looking down on the distant specks of life,
Feeling weightless and free,
Scanning the landscape as I dance round the planet.
Racing on the breeze,
Travelling our beautiful world of dreams
Born feeble -
But achieving the impossible.

A Life in the Wind

Her darting eyes never stop,
She scans the horizon, until her eyes lock
On that one spot.
A millisecond later she is in flight,
Her wings are taking control tonight.


Looking back at obscure specks of life,
Above seems only the darkness of night.
Scouting below are the rocky hollows,
Where other birds, like finches and swallows,
Dip, dive and glide
Until the moon becomes their only light.


Soaring away from the captivating cities of stone,
She ventures towards the crashing waves of the murky sea,
It’s her time to race the vast horizon.

Flying

Soaring through the skies,
Dawn to dusk,
Racing down the runway,
Without the help of machines,
Clouds below, clouds above,
Body like an arrow.
Swooping, surfing the ocean,
Gliding through the clouds with ease.
Dancing through life’s path in the skies,
Countries, oceans, mountain, forests,
Distant specks of life,
Covered by heaven’s light.
I too dream I could fly, I am just a man,
I dive down to the ground
And grace the earth.
